El Pueblo Magico Bacalar is located in the southern Quintana roo, close to the border of Belize. (30 min.). It’s located next to the famous 307 highway which goes all the way south from Cancun to Chetumal, so it’s very easy to get there. If you’d ask me, I love to travel the local way! There are collectivos (the well-known, local white vans for 12-20 persons) going from each destination. It’s a 5-hour drive from Cancun, a 4-hour drive from Playa del Carmen and a 2,5-hour drive from Tulum. You can also choose to go with the organized bus company ADO. They use larger buses which makes the travel more expensive, longer but probably also more comfortable. Keep in mind that there are different types of buses, one can be more expensive (first class) than the other. To plan your bus travel, check out www.ado.com.mx.
Bacalar is quite small and easy to navigate by foot. Bikes can also be rented to explore the area and taxis are relatively inexpensive (20 pesos). If you’d desire you can even rent an electrical bicycle. It’s a great way to tour down the ‘costera’ and enjoying the fresh breeze of the lagoon! You can find them in front of the restaurant called Enamora (avenida 5 con calle 18).
